Gastroplasty is a procedure, also known as Vertical Banded Gastroplasty or VBG. The Gastroplasty weight loss surgery involves the surgerically dividing the stomach into two sections. The upper section is a small vertical pouch. The lower section of the stomach is not surgically altered. While it is a safe procedure, the amount of weight loss achieved is typically less than that of other procedures such as Roux-en Y Gastric Bypass or Bilipancreatic Diversion with duodenal switch. The patient of a gastroplasty does not recieve additional help by malasorption from the intestines because the surgery does not alter the intestines.
