Malabsorptive Procedure is an operation, such as the Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD), Biliopancreatic Diversion with the Scopinaro (BPDS) approarch or the Duodenal Switch (DS) with a Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD-DS) cause large weight loss is severly morbidly obese patients. The procedure is a very aggressive and complicated compared to other weight loss surgeries. Weight loss is significant and the side effects can be great. Patients seeking the type of weight loss surgery should be properly informed and committed. Like the Roux-en Y there is malabsorbtion but due to the amount of intestines removed or bypassed weight loss is greater and the malnutriention needs to be monitored. This surgery is used under strict guidelines as the surgery has many side effects and requires continues medical monitor throughout the life a patient having any Malabsorptive Procedure. Patient must also take supplements to ensure health due to the loss of the intestines ability to absorb nutrients.
